HR Project Partners is currently accepting resumes for a Geology Technician on behalf of one of our clients. The ideal candidate would have experience supporting all activities relating to drilling programs including work in remote exploration areas and infill drilling in active mining areas.
This position is in Labrador City, NL. This is a full-time position.
The role will have a range of day to day activities, but primarily will include: processing of drill samples (including loading drill core on tables, photography, core splitting, sampling, collection, measurement of drill core); supporting Senior Technician in range of daily tasks; assisting in the management and upkeep of the core shack, project areas, vehicles, and equipment; participating in HSE related activities including safety meetings, risk assessments, and HSE observations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Processing drilling samples (drill core) including: sample delivery and tracking; core cutting using hydraulic splitter or rock saw; core photography; sample retention management (all ore samples are split in half with one half of the core going for analysis while the other half is maintained for a permanent record of the hole); handling drill core within the core shack and yard (This involves all movement of the core when it first enters the facility transfer from pallets to core table for logging, then to splitting area, and finally movement to the outside storage area).
- Sample delivery (drill core) to internal laboratory or dispatch for external specialist laboratories. All ore samples are moved to and from the lab by pickup truck. A select number of samples from the lab are later grouped and prepared for shipments to external labs for additional analysis.
- Assisting Supervising/Senior Technician in day to day management of the projects, which may included include logistics, cost tracking, ordering and inventory control, HSE activities (including contractor management), management and upkeep of the core shack, project areas, vehicles, and equipment.
- May be involved in grade control, sampling, and other geology related tasks.
- Communicate with other members of the Technical Services geology team (including Project Management, Geologists, Technicians, and Support staff); Operations; HR; HSE department; site laboratory personnel.
- Communicate with Drilling Contractors, Geophysical Contractors, Site preparation and Earthmoving Contractors, External Laboratories. Working as a team with Internal and External stakeholders will be critical in this role.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- NL Grade 12 Diploma or Equivalent.
- Technology Diploma (Desirable).
- Previous experience in an entry level position within the resources sector (Desirable)
- Forklift Operation Certification (Desirable).
- Valid driver’s license (Essential).
- Ability to wear a full face / half mask respirator.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (standing for long periods of time, lifting heavy loads up to 50 to 60 pounds, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills, & Attributes:
- Must understand IOC/RT HSE systems, standards, and procedures that relate to the work.
- Understand the impact of decisions and work practices on the environment (in particular water management).
- Understand the mining environment in order to minimise and delays to production, when working in the pit environment.
- Understand the requirements of government approvals and how to meet approval conditions during day-to-day work (e.g., water management, ground disturbance, timber management, rehabilitation).
- Understand the importance of ground licence / lease conditions and how that relates to the work (e.g., cost tracking and assignment, property boundaries).
- Good written and verbal skills in English (Essential).
- Ability to work independently with little direction and/or within a team environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to forecast, analyze and work under pressure.
- Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
